Kids with reading challenges require specialized instruction and other support services. Here are some of the providers we know who work in Decatur, Georgia and have special training and experience working with dyslexia. Our list includes reading tutors, handwriting tutors, occupational therapists and speech therapists.
Laura Smith at Accelerated Learning
Laura specializes in reading, phonemic development, fluency, comprehension and academic-based assessments. She is Orton-Gillingham Trained from K- Adult and trained in Lindamood-Bell and Fast ForWord.
Laura also performs assessments to determine which areas of reading are causing your child to struggle. For some children this type of testing might be a good alternative to getting a costly and time-consuming psycho-ed evaluation.

Abbe is an Orton-Gillingham tutor specializing in remediation with reading, writing and spelling. She went through the two-year teacher training program at The Schenck School (a school that specializes in teaching kids with dyslexia).

Deloris Wade Ball at Accelerated Learning
Deloris lives in Decatur and tutors part-time at Accellearn in downtown Decatur. She has taught for eleven years as a paraprofessional in a private elementary school setting. She is certified in the Orton-Gillingham methodology and certified in Adult Literacy.

Danielle Beck at Bright Reading
Danielle Beck offers Orton-Gillingham-based instruction in reading, writing, and spelling. She tutors children who have dyslexia or other reading struggles. She’s a certified secondary language arts teacher with a M.A. in Secondary English Ed. She has also completed the yearlong associate’s level Orton-Gillingham training at the Schenck School, and has logged more than 200 OG tutoring hours with students from Saint Thomas More, Morningside Elementary, Marylin, and Fernbank. Danielle will soon be applying for membership with the National Academy of OG Practitioners.

PediaSpeech: Dyslexia Remediation, Speech & OT
Jennifer is trained in Orton Gillingham, and works as a speech language pathologist specializing in teaching kids with language-based reading disorders (she’s also an Oakhurst Elementary parent).
Jennifer and her colleagues work with many CSD elementary-aged kids who’ve been diagnosed with dyslexia or language-based reading disorders. They teach kids how to read using an Orton Gillingham approach while addressing the underlying language issues.
PediaSpeech also has an Occupational Therapist on staff that works with hand writing and sensory-based difficulties.

Angelika Brocklehurst: Occupational Therapy (OT)
Angelika provides Occupational Therapy (OT) services for school-aged children. She’s a certified provider of Neuronet Learning Programs, and of Interactive Metronome. She also provides contract OT services to City Schools of Decatur, where she has worked with all grade levels over the past 4 and half years.

Kim Rossi at Around Decatur Speech and Language Therapy, LLC
Kim is a speech language pathologist who provides family-oriented services to children, from toddlers through teens, in their homes, preschools, and in the community. Services include speech and language evaluations and therapy for speech sound disorders, stuttering/fluency disorders, language disorders and delays, and pragmatic/social language. Kim has many years of experience working with children with language-based learning disabilities. Prior to working in private practice, Kim worked for public school systems, and provided services both at schools and community sites. Kim is a long-time Decatur resident and CSD parent.

Kara Campbell, A/AOGPE & Dyslexia Practitioner/IDA
Kara Campbell is Orton-Gillingham certified at the Academy Associate Level and is certified by the International Dyslexia Association as a Dyslexia Practitioner. Kara received all her training at The Schenck School. She is also a certified Handwriting Without Tears specialist. She holds bachelors degrees in English and Public Relations. Kara is the founding president of the City Schools of Decatur Special Education PTA.

Kristin Ebersold, OTR/L: Occupational Therapy
Kristin is a pediatric occupational therapist at Oakhurst Occupational Therapy. She provides occupational therapy to children in her private clinic in the City of Decatur or in a child’s home/school. She specializes in sensory integration, but also works with children with general motor/developmental delays. She’s certified by the program “Handwriting Without Tears.” She has been working with children as an occupational therapist since 1997. She resides in Decatur and has three children in the CSD school system.
Nancy Lindenbaum at NanKids
NanKids is a private, learning disabilities tutorial service for ages 5-16. Nancy is a trained dyslexia tutor who uses Orton Gillingham phonics which is aimed at helping children overcome and compensate for their difficulties. Tutorial services include: learning disabilities, executive functioning, Orton-Gillingham, essay and compositional writing, spelling, math, penmanship (particularly cursive), reading comprehension, study skills and adult dyslexia tutoring (develop spelling for email writing, reading for pleasure, and reading for the workplace).

Christine Javier at Learning Ridge
Christine Javier has 8 years of experience as a Special Education teacher, and has helped 100+ private clients of all ages overcome educational challenges. She has used Otron-Gillingham with many students with dyslexia, utilizing a curriculum aligned with Common Core State Standards.
Learning Ridge offers a range of specialized programs including: Orton-Gillingham (certified), Handwriting Without Tears® (certified) and Singapore Math. Christine currently works with students that have dyslexia, Autism/Aspergers Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, and Developmental Delays, as well as gifted students. Individual or group sessions are conducted by an educational specialist at your home or at a public library, bookstore, etc.

Ladder Learning Services LLC
Since 2009, Ladder Learning Services LLC has provided excellent, affordable tutoring services to children and adults with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD and other learning challenges in metro Atlanta. Our Literacy Specialists are trained/certified in the Orton-Gillingham approach, Barton, Wilson, and SPIRE®. We also have tutors who are trained in Handwriting Without Tears ® and Lindamood-Bell ® Visualizing and Verbalizing ® program for reading comprehension, On Cloud 9 ® program for math, and LiPS ® program for phonemic awareness skills.

Florence Cannon, MS, CCC-SLP at The Language Group
Florence is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Reading Specialist with over 15 years’ experience in reading assessments, reading and language tutoring, and speech-language therapy. She helps students with language issues related to reading success, such as phonological awareness, memory, vocabulary, and processing. Florence is trained in Lindamood-Bell’s Seeing Stars and The Spalding Method (Orton-Gillingham-based phonics), and Lindamood-Bell’s Visualizing and Verbalizing program (oral and written comprehension). Florence conducts assessments and provides services for students from preschool through college who struggle with reading comprehension, fluency, decoding, and written expression, as well as spoken language. She also advocates for families at IEP meetings.

Ms. Ty Laurie – Orton Gillingham and Handwriting Without Tears Tutor
Ty Laurie is an Orton-Gillingham and Handwriting Without Tears trained tutor. After several years of O-G tutoring experience, she became an associate in training with the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, under the tutelage of Rosalie Davis (The Schenck School). Ty holds a B.A. from Brenau University and has completed two years of her masters degree in Special Education.
Ty is a substitute teacher for City Schools of Decatur, and taught for 7 years at a private school. She is the mom of a freshman at Emory University, and a junior at The Galloway School.
Availability: Ty has slots available for homeschoolers, a few afternoon slots, and availability this summer.

Nicole Vella, MA, CDP, A/AOGPE
Nicole Vella is a reading specialist and dyslexia practitioner who specializes in teaching both early reading foundational skills as well as more advanced language comprehension and writing skills. Nicole has a Master of Arts degree in Reading Science. In addition, she completed both the Teacher Training I and Teacher Training II courses at the Schenck School, and she holds Associate Level certification with the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. She is certified through the International Dyslexia Association as a Dyslexia Practitioner. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of New York, Plattsburgh in English.

Anne Weidert at Weidert Tutoring
Anne has worked with struggling readers and writers for 15 years. She tutors in schools, aftercare programs and her office. She’s a certified Reading Specialist with degrees in Early Childhood and Special Education. She’s trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach and uses Handwriting Without Tears, along with other games and activities. She worked previously as a classroom teacher and special education teacher. She helps kids with a variety learning differences including dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism, speech apraxia, and language deficits. Anne believes that kids learn best when they feel confident and comfortable, so she concentrates on building a positive relationship first.
